Delays and Detours

If you are arriving late in the evening via the Mass Turnpike (e.g. from CT, NY, NJ, etc), you should be aware that the Pike Eastbound will be closed from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am beyond the Copley Square exit.

The directions to the hotel will still work. However, since all traffic will be exiting at Copley, you may experience some adverse traffic conditions.

Note: A source informs us that the detour route goes past the hotel. If you come in from the Pike, you can follow the detour signs to the hotel.

An alternate route from the Pike is to get off at exit 18 (Allston/Brighton), and get on Storrow Drive eastbound. Take the Copley Square exit from Storrow. You will be forced to turn right onto Clarendon St. Go 7 blocks, turn left onto Stuart St. Go 2 blocks until the intersection of Arlington St. Hotel is on the left.

For more details on this closure, see the Big Dig site.

Parking

In downtown Boston, price and convenience of parking are inversely proportional.

  • In general, the cheapest option is to park at the end of an MTBA line, and take the T in. Parking ranges from $2 to $4/day, and the basic subway fare is $1 from most stations. See www.mbta.com for more information.

  • The cheapest parking within walking distance of the hotel is at the Boston Common Garage. The weekend rate is $9/day. In addition, we will be selling for $4 a sticker which you can attach to your Boston Common Parking Garage ticket. The sticker is good for $9 off your stay, but you can only use one sticker per stay. So by doing this, you save $5.

If you go out each morning before 10:00 and take your car out of the garage, drive it around the block, and put it back in, you'll be charged for only one day at a time instead of all three days together. You'll have three tickets to attach stickers to. The rate at the garage is $9 per day, so by spending $12 at the sales table you'll avoid having to give the garage any money at all.

If you don't go out each morning, then the sticker will reduce your parking for the weekend from $27 to $18. Add in the $4 you spent on a ticket and you get $22 total cost for the weekend. The $23 that was printed in the pre-reg packet was a typo.

NOTE: The sticker is only valid if you enter after 4:00 pm on Friday.

Stickers will be on sale at the Arisia Sales table on the mezzanine (where you can also buy a fine commemerative T-shirt, and sign up for Arisia '04).

  • The most expensive, but most convenient, option is the Motor Mart/Kinney Systems Garage across the street from the hotel ($24 for 24 hours). Actually, if you're staying in the hotel, the most expensive, most convenient option is valet parking at the hotel's motor entrance.
